What is a Cosy, Hygge Lifestyle?

Before I write about anything too specific, I thought it would be nice to talk more broadly about living a cosy Hygge lifestyle. For me, it’s all about a feeling.

What is a Cosy, Hygge Lifestyle?

The feeling of safety, warmth and togetherness creates a cosy, Hygge life. The feeling of being tucked up in your own little world, safe and warm, even on those beautiful rainy days. It’s about loving nature, seeing the joy in tiny things, looking for glimmers, creating a ritual out of making your favourite brew, snuggling up for movies and lighting a cosy candle. For me, the following elements create a cosy Hygge vibe, but please feel free to add in your thoughts and ideas to the comments, I’d love to hear them!

Cosy Home

A big part of my cosy lifestyle is how I design my home. It doesn’t have to cost the earth, a few throws and candles, fairy lights and soft music, it all adds to the ambiance of your home. Textures, cosy colours, creating cosy nooks or layering blankets across your sofa, these are all things we can add to our spaces to make them feel cosy. For me, I love soft autumnal colours, an abundance of candles, cosy blankets and Norah Jones on repeat. Whatever works to make YOU feel cosy, that’s what really matters.

Candles

Candles are my go to for creating a cosy space. They bring a gentle warmth to a home and remind you to slow down. Layered candles, faux flames, anything to make the room you’re in feel warm and welcoming. I tend to buy the big jar ones that smell divine and you can even buy them seasonally to work throughout the year. However, spiced pumpkin candles are my go to all year round!

Clothing

What you wear can also make you feel cosy. You can create outfits to evoke all sorts of feelings and vibes, and for me, it has to be a snuggly feeling. Oversized jumpers, knitwear, dungarees, cosy cardigans… Textures, shape and fit can make you physically feel warm and snuggly, which is pretty much my aim every day if I’m honest! What can’t a cableknit jumper fix? I’m waiting…

Food

Homemade food, or even just the process of warming up a tin of soup and toasting a slice of bread, slathering it in butter, taking the time to eat and taste and appreciate every mouthful… What’s more cosy than that? I love to light a candle and bake or cook as the flame flickers, whilst I try my hardest to get my Alexa to play something soothing. She’s quite stubborn some days! Food definitely creates a certain vibe, so get cooking or baking and share with your loved ones to get that Hygge feeling!

Togetherness

A large focus when it comes to Hygge is togetherness. Imagine being with your loved ones, chattering over hot mugs of tea, laughing, feeling cosy and warm and safe? That’s Hygge for you. I love it when we gather together and chatter about our favourite things, or when my mother comes with cake and we have tea and pop a movie on. The way I feel when we come together is beautiful and priceless.

Slow Down

Being present is a large part of Hygge and cosy living. As someone with a neurodivergent brain, I do find it super hard to switch off. However, I also know how important it is to do so, so losing myself in more meaningful tasks like cooking a meal from scratch and sharing it with loved ones can really help me zone out from all the noise. Taking slow walks with my dog Peaches also helps to ground me and I’m able to zone in on the beauty of the world around me.

Simplicity

Finding joy in the simpler things is such a gorgeous way to live. It really helps you to hone in on what’s important. I never used to do little things like run a bubble bath for myself, always needing to be on the go. And even though I haven’t fully perfected relaxing 100% (it’s a work in progress) I do make sure I have a weekly bath with a book and a lovely hot cup of tea. The process of making such simple things an act of respect and care really changes the way we live.

Glimmers

One of my best friends adores glimmers and I think she’s on to something! Spotting the tiny things in life, looking at the shape of clouds, listening to the birdsong, the feeling when a butterfly dances across your view and flits away, all of these things contribute glimmers of joy to your world and make each day that much more special. I particularly love impromptu rainy days full of dancing and feeling the rain on your skin, so magical!

As you can see, these things all link together and create a kind of cosy harmony, perfect if you are looking for a slower pace of life. I definitely am, so I hope you’ll enjoy watching and reading about my journey into the world of cosy and hygge living. I can already see a difference to my mental health and well-being by implementing small things, so I cannot wait to continue the journey to an even more peaceful and harmonous life.
